In this essay, I am going to talk about the exhibition “The Power of Making” what so interesting in this exhibition and why did I go to see it? Talk about what is in the exhibition and what interesting me that makes me looked at it? Why did the artist create those works and how did they create them? What inspire me the most and why? How do I feel after going to the exhibition and why is it worth or not worth to go and see this exhibition?
In this “The power of making” Exhibition was created by Daniel Charney the curator. The purpose of the exhibitions name are meant to explain how powerful making is and way that we solve problems expressing ideas and shape our world. Defining what and who we are and how we communicate. The knowledge of how to make and create by everyday object is one of humanity’s most precious resources.
What actually in the exhibition are produces of difference artists and what so interesting about their works. Although there aren’t many work have been shown in the exhibition, but the composition and lighting of the work were great. Nearly all the produces in this exhibition were made by our everyday objects. For example wood, plastic, wools and metals. Different type of materials have different effect from the outcome and by understand the artist work, you need to know why he choose to do this produce and what purpose is it in his/her work. Why does this piece of work attract you to look at it and talk about it?
There are a lot of interesting masterpieces that I like in the exhibition. For example the “Alphabet pencil tip sculpture” made by Paltern Ghetti. It’s a simple piece of work, but it takes a lot of skills to make the alphabet with only sewing needle and razor on the lead. Using our daily life object pencil for the material made a fine piece of art work out of it interest me the most. Think about it, the steps are simple, but the progress must be difficult because of the fragile lead from the pencil can be snapped so easily and it must take a long period of time and tries to produce one alphabet out of a pencil. Instead of throwing the pencil away, he used it as his work. It’s a really good example of being green to the environment. So I like this piece of work a lot.
The second masterpiece that interested me is the Hexapod robot. What so interesting about the hexapod robot is it was equipped with interchangeable tool head and when the head was installed, there is a small milling machine or motion sensors. Which will makes the robot sense your movement and react towards it. For example: when u moves to the right, the robots head will move to the right. When the joint of the head is fully turn, the legs will move along your movement. This robot is equipped to be a spider so that the robot and reach to different places and small gaps for repairing or do fabrication jobs in hands – to – reach places.
With the technology now a day, this kind of progress is easy to make and process. But why do the Hexapod robot interest me that much is because the way it was programmed and how it react to your movement is different to other robots. When u goes up, it goes up. When u switches off the light, it turn up the light from its eye so the sensor can detect you. You can say that this robot was made for entertainment and for repairing places that human can’t be reached.
When a human’s life comes to an end. There is an object that let the body rest in peace. This object is a coffin. Ghanaian lion coffin, Joseph Tetteh created this coffin for the celebrated family workshop of Kane Kwei. This coffin was those brightly painted craved works reflect an individual’s jobs and aspiration and the reason why the coffin was made to be a lion is because it represent the achievement of the hunter. The coffin was made out of fine woods that are easily been burned in a car, a cigar, a coca cola bottle or an air Jordan shoes. The creator always says that the caving was always been first and foremost for her and she had a hobbit that she always work on a small scale of the produce she is making. After the sample was complete she will transfer it into a full-scale sculpture, but it’s always difficult to make new piece even it is a model she have worked for months.
What is the most beautiful part of the body in a human being? The eyes are the answer and we all know it. David Carpenter is the creator of the “Artificial eyes, cosmetic shells and facial prosthetics”; his works is to make a model or a mask off his patient by using plastic and colour effect. By using his skills, the models of the patient’s eyes are really looked alike because of his handwork and his experience of the colour mixture were great. By producing the colour the matches the patient’s eyes properly, he must be confident towards the colours to produce his best quality for his work with comfort, functionality, colours and symmetry, so the patient and wear the mask without ripping the mask or damage the patient’s face by the material the worker uses. To produce one of the masks, it takes two to three months to complete one for fully in used.
There is something hard and its wearable for the time of fashion. It’s a pair of shoes. This pair of shoes is not ordinary, the shape of the shoes and the texture of the shoes and different compare to the shoes that we usually wear. It’s made out of hard plastic and the creator is John Lobb and shoemaker. This pair of shoes is called “Bespoke shoes” Each shoe have one hundred and ninety steps before it’s completed, but this shoes only contain four steps which is quite special. In each pair of shoes, it carries out by specialised craft workers who served long apprentices to produce those quality shoes. And the way the shoes look is like Japanese style, plain and simple and the it was made doesn’t look like it will be a comfortable shoes to be wearing judged by the shape of the shoes. But just by looking at the outcome of the shoes, I found it really interesting and I like it a lot.
There are a lot more interesting pieces through the exhibition, but these were the works that caught my eyes the most. The shape of the outcome, the colours, the texture, the meaning and the purpose of the creator were explained so clearly through their work. Their work inspire me and let me experiment my ideas further by using some of their ideas into my research to create a new outcome for my final piece. Pushing my ideas farther by using the inspiration from the artist.
In the exhibition, the way the artist and the creator use their research and material are incredible. Their work piece inspires me when I looked at them and the work explain how much effect and time the creator puts into it with patient and practice. The most inspired me is the alphabet sculpture. Its because the outcome is amazing and the progress is complicated using a normal life material object to create an artwork with such fragile surface without the lead snap and damaged is a difficult task to do. Using the lead of the pencil and used only sewing needles and razor knife to produce the alphabet a to z is just too amazing. I wonder how many times did he tries until he complete one alphabet?
The second piece that interests me is the hexapod robot. It’s because of technology and the way the robot was installed is that there is a sensor in its head and it senses your movement than reacted to it by moving its legs and head to catch your position. I know that this kind of technology has been produce a long time ago, but the way it was programmed and the progress was interesting, the way the spider moves and the way it looks at you is different compare to each robots. By using these robots, you can control them to do repairing in places that a human body can be reached like gaps between cupboards or drains.
After a long talk about the exhibition, I hope you found the exhibition interest and agreed on my options. I have been inspired from this exhibition that even a daily object can be produce as an artwork and how much research and experiments you need to produce to creator a masterpiece that people will be interested in or even inspired by it.
